Fred Beyer- Teacher / Founder of
Hot Rod High
For years, Fred Beyer taught auto technology at  Shawano High School in Shawano Wisconsin.  He noticed students dozing in class and felt he could find a way to motivate them.  An entertainer and old-car buff, Beyer launched Hot Rod High in 2000.  Each year students at the school restore a classic car.
     Beyer trademarked and copyrighted
the name Hot Rod High so he could roll his program out to other schools after retiring.  "It's not about money,"  he said, "it's about motivating kids to do things with their hands."  In 2009, students in the program at  Freedom high school, in Freedom Wisconsin, restored

the one-of-a-kind MohsOstentatienne
Sedan built by invertor Bruce Mohs.
Beyer is a mover and a shaker
because his program connects with kids who may have lost an interest in school.  He makes science and math fun by teaching car-building skills.  The
students work on cars after school.  No
school or taxpayer funding is involved,
and the hot rod owners pay for the parts.  Rick Karcz, who had a yellow Model A surf woddie restored in Hot Rod High, says the experience was rewarding because the students took pride and ownership in their work.
